What web based platform could host 200,000 users?

What software solution would allow me to have a web based environment with 1/4 million users. I need discussion forums, user profiles, secure authentication, database, and financial transactions. I need to build the box and solution. It should have some slick front end and allow me to show a clip or two. The task is a clinical trials with users paying 5/month to be a part of it. I need to be able to accept the transaction, keep their info safe, allow them to interact, show them the odd clip, send the odd reminder note, allow them to log some info and update it, some CMS functionality. Any suggestions?

This IS purely dependent on your application. Irrespective of the technologies, you%26#039;ll need to go in for a %26quot;dedicated server%26quot; or atleast a %26quot;Virtual Private Server%26quot;.

Technologies:

If you had used Microsoft technologies (ASP / .NET) for your application, then we need to set-up a Windows server with IIS with MS-SQL installed on it. The downside of this is that it is pretty expensive.

Else (PERL / PHP / Python etc), I suggest you go for Linux with Apache and MySQL installed on it. The merits include both the performance and the cost.

As regards the application, I suggest you take some free applications from http://www.ning.com and host your website with http://www.hostjack.co.uk ( sales@hostjack.co.uk )

If you are really asking of platforms, i would suggest you consider PHP and MYSQL, these are free, open source and secure applications that can let you develop the kind of application you are talking about. The Box, it%26#039;s preferable if you had a Linux box with Apache, php and mysql loaded on it. If you want to consider some Microsoft alternatives, you can consider IIS and ASP.NET this platform is as interesting as the previous one but comes at some cost.

The rest of every thing depends on the development of your website application. not on the platform.

Other Replys:PHP MySQL

Other Replys:I think he is asking the server OS (platform) ...
